New Glasgow Kin Host 2016 MS Walk
2016 marked the 19th year that the New Glasgow Kinettes and Kinsmen hosted the Medavie Blue Cross MS Walk. The co-chairs of this year’s event are all newcomers to both the Kinettes/Kinsmen as well as to the MS Walk. Katelyn Dykstra, Brian MacIntosh and Lynn Fleet had all joined Kin within this past year but were under the guidance of Dale Paris, a long time volunteer with the MS Walk. Over 20 Kinettes and Kinsmen volunteered for this year’s events and ensured the walk went off with out a hitch.
The New Glasgow Walk is one of 14 walks taking place throughout Atlantic Canada during the month of May and it’s the society’s largest pledge based fundraiser. The monies raised during these walks are dedicated to what the MS Society thinks is ground breaking research led by Canadians as well as programs & services so that people affected by this disease can have the best quality of life until a cure is found.
This year’s MS Walk was held on a beautiful sunny day on May 29th, at the Glasgow Square with 29 participants registered online and over 50 total walkers taking part. They raised a total of over $13, 000. After the 3.3km walk that started at Glasgow Square, went across the George Street Bridge and then onto the Samson Trail and back the participants came back to Glasgow Square for a lunch provided by our local Subway. This event wouldn’t be possible without the many sponsors including Medavie Blue Cross, Air Canada Foundation, Sobeys, East Coast FM radio, the New Glasgow News and Subway.
